How Dulux Protective Coatings protects mining and heavy industrial assets

How Dulux Protective Coatings protects mining and heavy industrial assets

In the mining and heavy industrial sectors, asset owners face a myriad challenges when it comes to protecting plant buildings, equipment and machinery.

As well as abrasion and corrosion from chemicals and dust, assets in these sectors require protection from Australia's harsh inland and coastal environments, including severe UV, water and salt exposure.

Here are three ways Dulux Protective Coatings provide optimal protection for mining and heavy industrial assets:

  1. Designed in Australia for Australian conditions

We leverage world-class technologies while designing coatings specifically for the highly corrosive Australian environment. Our chemists also design and test our products to solve specific industry challenges.

The Duremax range is a perfect example. The ingenious glass flake technology behind Duremax GFX has made it one of Dulux Protective Coating's most durable and in-demand products to protect steel surfaces from the harsh and corrosive elements present in mining environments.

"The glass flakes create a ‘torturous path’ for corrosive dust, chemicals and water borne salts, making it extremely difficult for them to access the steel substrate,” explains Dulux Protective Coatings Technical Sales Representative, Rodney Mann.

Duremax GPE uses the latest epoxy technology to deliver enhanced barrier protection in severe industrial environments. It was the perfect choice for protecting large steel tanks at a new rare earths processing facility in Kalgoorlie, WA.

Innovative technologies also power our fluoropolymer products and MIO coatings.

  1. Top performers in product trials

We encourage our customers to test and compare our products, as we're confident Dulux Protective Coatings will consistently meet (or exceed) performance expectations.

To ensure robust protection of its infrastructure, the team at Queensland Magnesia (QMAG) mine conducted its own product trials, comparing the performance of various coatings. As well as protecting assets from highly corrosive magnesium dust, the coatings needed to withstand regular cleaning with high salt, locally sourced water. Dulux Protective Coatings Duremax GFX and Weathermax HBR were determined to be the best fit for the job.

In Melbourne, experienced applicators McElligotts Partners conducted extensive product trials before embarking on the complete strip and recoat of the Westgate Bridge. As well as being buffeted by high winds, the bridge carries large traffic volumes, which produce significant pollution and grime. Zincanode 402, Durebild STE, Durebild STE MIO and Weathermax HBR MIO were selected.

"Extensive product trials conducted by McElligotts Partners saw Dulux Protective Coatings chosen for exceptional product performance and durability, as well as our record of service and technical support,” says Daniel McKeown, Dulux Protective Coatings Specification and Projects Manager.

  1. First class technical support and product supply

Dulux Protective Coatings’ technical experts provide tailored solutions for mining and heavy industry customers across Australia. In particular, Joel Bock, Rik Morton and Dan Savage are mining and heavy industrial sector specialists. They leverage the expertise of our chemists and support our team nation-wide to solve complex problems.

The development of a robust coatings system for a C-5M (highly corrosive marine) environment in Darwin is an excellent example. Working with applicators and the asset owner, Dulux Protective Coating's Joel Boucher developed a PUR 5 equivalent system and provided on-site application support.

At the Kemerton Lithium Plant, Joel Bock and the Dulux Protective Coatings technical team worked closely with site engineers to design a coatings system for the unique, high alkaline environment.

Product supply has become an additional challenge since the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted global supply chains. Fortunately, Dulux Protective Coatings products are manufactured locally, in Dandenong and Merryfield (VIC) and Rocklea (QLD), enabling us to fulfil our customer orders through high impact service.

At a South Australian mine upgrade, Dulux Protective Coatings provided almost 20,000 litres of coatings with no delays, to really tight deadlines, helping the applicator coat around 55 pipes every week despite the pandemic.
