Exhibition Station Redevelopment Supports Future Rail Connectivity in Brisbane

Exhibition Station has been redeveloped as part of the Cross River Rail project to improve access to the Brisbane Showgrounds and surrounding precincts.

Major construction was completed in 2025, with the project delivered by the Cross River Rail in partnership with Queensland Rail, alongside architects, fabricators, and specialist applicators. The station will temporarily open for major events, including the Ekka and other large-scale functions at the Showgrounds, before opening year-round for services when Cross River Rail becomes operational in 2029.

Improved Access for Key Precincts

The upgraded station supports access to key destinations including the RNA Showgrounds, King Street precinct, Herston Quarter, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Upgrades have focused on accessibility and ease of movement. The station now provides step-free access via lifts and ramps, improved wayfinding signage, and hearing aid loops. A new entry plaza and pedestrian connection to Bowen Bridge Road have also been delivered to improve connectivity to surrounding areas.
Once fully operational, the station will support commuter access to nearby commercial, hospitality, and healthcare precincts.

Built at Scale

The redevelopment involved significant material volumes to support long-term use and high visitor numbers. Construction included approximately 1,100 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 cubic metres of concrete, along with 105,500 brick pavers and 11,000 tiles.

Protective Coating System for Structural Steel

Structural steel throughout the station has been protected using a Dulux® Protective Coatings system designed for exposed rail environments.

The system, specified by Dulux® Protective Coatings Business Development Executive James Booth, comprises Dulux® Zincanode® 402, a zinc-rich primer for corrosion resistance, followed by Dulux® Duremax® GPE MIO, an epoxy intermediate coat that forms a protective barrier. A custom Dulux® Quantum® V92 topcoat system completes the specification, supporting durability in high-use and exposed conditions while helping to reduce long-term maintenance requirements.

Preparing for Future Services Demand

Exhibition Station will initially operate for major events before transitioning to full-time services as part of Cross River Rail. Once operational, it will support increased passenger demand and play a role in servicing major events, including the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
