Revitalising the Existing Coating System
The existing coating system at QSEC had suffered from poor maintenance, with ad hoc coatings applied over time. Dulux Protective Coatings Business Development Executive, James Booth assessed the condition and adhesion of the current coating system, developed an achievable maintenance plan, and specified a suitable coating system that would provide long-term protection. With a tight project window of only six weeks, James was tasked to ensure product supply and deliver a high-quality result within the specified timeframe.
Comprehensive Coating Remediation Advice
To address the challenges at hand, James and applicator Scott Blair from Satintouch selected a comprehensive coating remediation process. This involved conducting adhesion testing and colour matching for the project with James attending site meetings to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
A Meticulous Coating Process
The coating process at QSEC involved thorough cleaning and preparation of the surfaces. Starting by removing grease, oil, dirt, and other contaminants using an alkaline detergent. Corroded areas were spot abrasive blast cleaned, and loose or flaking coating was carefully removed. Coating edges were feathered back, and the remaining surfaces were power tool abraded to ensure proper adhesion. Finally, all spent abrasive and residual dust were meticulously removed using dry compressed air, vacuuming, or sweeping with a clean brush.
The Perfect Coating System
The coating system specified consisted of three coats to ensure long-term protection and durability. The process involved the following:
• Spot prime: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns DFT (Dry Film Thickness), a two-pack epoxy zinc rich primer formulated for cathodic corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments.
• 2nd coat: Dulux® Durebild® STE @ 125-microns DFT, is a surface-tolerant epoxy with superior surface wetting properties, excellent corrosion resistance, and as a high-performance maintenance coating.
• Topcoat: Dulux® Quantum® V92 @ 75-microns DFT, a two-pack fluoropolymer topcoat provides excellent weathering and gloss retention in high UV radiation areas.
"With the use of a fluoropolymer technology in these coatings ensures the longevity and durability of the surfaces, allowing QSEC to maintain its pristine appearance and functionality for years to come," said James.
"From the initial concept to the final delivery, Dulux Protective Coatings provided unwavering support, ensuring a seamless process from start to finish," said Scott. "With their reliable supply of top-quality products and quick turnaround time, we were able to meet our project's requirements and achieve outstanding results. The durability and longevity of the coatings have exceeded our expectations, maintaining the surfaces' pristine appearance and functionality for years to come. We are extremely satisfied with the level of service and the exceptional performance of Dulux Protective Coatings."
