Ensuring Longevity for Port Hedland's Wharf

Port Hedland in Western Australia serves as a crucial hub for iron ore exports, with Anderson Point Wharf playing a significant role in bolstering the port's capabilities.

Port Hedland in Western Australia serves as a crucial hub for iron ore exports, with Anderson Point Wharf playing a significant role in bolstering the port's capabilities.

A 306-metre-long extension of Anderson Point Wharf was constructed, including seven independent berthing dolphins, to boost Port Hedland’s capacity in supporting the iron ore industry. To ensure the long-term durability of the steel supports in the harsh marine environment, Fortescue appointed Total AMS—part of the TAMS Group—to carry out essential remediation works, maintaining the structural integrity and functionality of the wharf.

TAMS Group's Coating Remediation Process

To maintain the structural integrity of the steel components, TAMS Group initiated a remediation process that involved abrasive blasting and cleaning of the existing coating. This meticulous preparation was necessary to ensure that the new coating adheres properly and cures effectively, enhancing the protective properties of the steel components against harsh environmental conditions.

To protect steel surfaces from harsh mining conditions, including immersion and splash zones, TAMS Group consulted with Dulux® Protective Coatings’ Kevin Johnston, who recommended applying two coats of Dulux® Duremax® GFX at 400-microns DFT each—specially formulated in Fortescue’s corporate colours, N23 Neutral Grey and B13 Navy Blue, to reduce the need for top coating.

"With its exceptional durability and resistance to harsh conditions, Duremax GFX provides long-lasting protection for steel components, ensuring their longevity and performance.", explains Kevin.
