Duremax® GFX the superior choice at Port Hedland

A coastal town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Port Hedland is known to be one of Australia's largest tidal ranges. Between low tide and high tide each day, the water level can rise up to seven metres.

As one of the world’s largest bulk export ports, the Port of Port Hedland is also incredibly busy. So, when the steel piles supporting Berth 3 required remediation works, speed was a critical factor. The Pilbara Ports Authority called on Dulux Protective Coatings and the applicators at PCM Group.

The coatings specification needed to deliver the following benefits:

  • superior corrosion resistance in the marine environment
  • efficient application – to accommodate the fast-moving tide and minimise disruption to port traffic

Duremax GFX delivers in a single coat

An ultra premium, high solids, high build glass flake surface-tolerant epoxy, Dulux® Duremax® GFX was an approved product on the Pilbara Ports Authority specification.

With a high ratio of glass flake, the high build surface tolerant epoxy was applied in a single coat application at 500-microns (um) to meet the project requirements.

Our Technical Sales Specialist in Port Hedland Kevin Johnston, explains: "Duremax GFX provides an excellent barrier for steel that is above and below the waterline. Because it is self-priming and has a very high build, we were able to supply a single coat solution.

"While Kevin was on call for support, the entire process went very smoothly with experienced applicators at the helm.

"Duremax GFX was extremely easy to apply and capabilities to achieve desired results were completed with tidal conditions” stated the PCM Group team.

Glass flakes block corrosive elements

With its high glass flake content, Duremax GFX provides an excellent barrier for steel in immersion or splash zones. It is ideally suited to resist atmospheric and marine corrosion in coastal and offshore environments.

"The layers of glass flakes make it very difficult for corrosive elements, including moisture and waterborne salts, to reach the substrate," Kevin explains.

Key product benefits include:

  • superior surface wetting and corrosion resistance
  • high performance maintenance coating for new or existing steel
  • self-priming finish – high solids and high build formulation
  • good abrasion and chemical resistance.
