Whitten Oval Precinct Transformation

The Whitten Oval precinct in Melbourne's west is set to be transformed into a bustling community hub, with plans for residential, retail, and community facilities alongside football amenities.

The project will be carried out in two stages. The second stage will see the construction of AFLW change room facilities, additional landscaping, and an indoor training facility, with the collaboration of Plinius Engineering, MakMax Australia, Adco Constructions and Profinish Coatings.

Stage 2 Coating System Used on External Mild Steel Surfaces

The second stage of the development of the Whitten Oval precinct will include the relocation and integration of the AFLW change room facilities, a new indoor training facility, additional landscaping works, and a translucent canopy on the western façade. The new facilities that are planned will improve the precinct's functionality with better facilities for the female players and staff. This will allow players to train and prepare for games more efficiently, ultimately improving their performance on the field.

The coating system used on the external mild steel surfaces of the facility includes:

•    1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns (µm), is zinc-rich epoxy primer that provides excellent corrosion protection. The primer contains a high level of zinc dust, which acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the steel substrate from corrosion
•    2nd coat: Dulux® Durebild® STE @ 150-microns (µm), is an epoxy coating that provides excellent adhesion, barrier protection, and durability
•    Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 75-microns (µm), is a high-build, high-performance acrylic coating that provides excellent UV resistance and weathering performance.

"As a Dulux Protective Coatings Consultant, I specified a coating system for the external mild steel surfaces of the Whitten Oval Training Facility that exceeds the standards set out by AS2312.1:2014 PUR 4. This standard sets out the performance requirements and test methods for protective coatings for steel structures exposed to atmospheric conditions.", says Chris Eldred.

The development of the Whitten Oval indoor training facility is an exciting project that will transform the area into a destination location for the western suburbs, providing an economic boost to the area and generating employment opportunities.
