The original 1928 bridge across the Hotham River in WA’s Wheatbelt was replaced with a new 88 metre version built with 1700 cubic metres of concrete and 600 tonnes of steel.

Main Roads WA engaged BDM Group for the new $15.2m construction, commissioning a design to cater for 3000 vehicles crossing every day, with heavy vehicles making up almost 20 per cent of this traffic.

Even though concrete and steel are known for their durability, they still need reliable protective coatings to withstand the harsh elements for many years. Joel Bock, State Sales Manager for Dulux® Protective Coatings in WA, suggests two custom coatings systems that utilize trusted combinations of high-performance Dulux Protective Coatings to safeguard the different substrates.

Applicators Nanokote air-sprayed the steel piles with a three-part PUR5 system:

  • A primer coat of Dulux® Zincanode 402 was applied at 75-microns (µms). This two pack epoxy zinc rich primer is formulated for cathodic corrosion resistance, a must for steel used in bridges spanning waterways
  • A maintenance coat of Dulux® Durebild STE was then sprayed on the steel to 200-microns (µms) thickness, providing extra barrier protection, as well as additional resistance to corrosion and chemical splash
  • A topcoat of Dulux® Weathermax HBR was sprayed to 100-microns thickness, creating a durable, low maintenance finish with superior gloss and colour retention, even in severe marine environments with high UV exposure

The concrete components were air-sprayed with a two coat system:

  • Primer Dulux® Durebild STE was applied at 75-microns (µms). Designed specifically for Australasian conditions, this surface tolerant epoxy will provide the concrete with long term barrier protection, tolerating both fresh and salt water immersion and industrial spills.
  • As with the steelwork, the concrete was finished with Dulux® Weathermax HBR at 100-microns (µms).

Joel explains why Weathermax HBR is used extensively in Main Roads WA infrastructure projects: “It’s a high-performance polyurethane topcoat with anti-graffiti resistance necessary to meet Main Roads Specification 908 requirements and handle repeated exposure to graffiti removal agents, all while retaining colour and gloss to keep assets looking good long term.”
