Ultimate protection for Gold Coast water tank

When a new water tank on Queensland's beautiful Gold Coast needed protection, Dulux® Protective Coatings provided the ideal solution.

Powerful protection in a coastal environment

An award-winning nature experience, Federation Walk starts opposite Sea World and leads all the way to the Gold Coast Seaway. A new water tank was constructed as part of a large-scale irrigation system to support the littoral rainforest restoration project at Federation Walk Coastal Reserve. The tank will store recycled water to help revegetate the area's ecologically endangered rainforest.

Hydro Vision was the major contractor for this Class B water project. They specified a Dulux Protective Coatings system to comply with the Australian standard for steel coatings within 350m of the ocean.

"We were chosen for two reasons," explains Queensland Sales Manager, Brendan Lichtendonk.

"First, the products used have been tested to be compliant for use in potable water AS/NZS 4020:2018. Our coating system also exceeds the AS/NZS 2312.2:2014 5D standard. Second, we offer a complete service package, from specification to application, backed by the significant technical expertise of our team."

The ideal system to protect against high marine corrosivity

Located in a Category C5-M (very high corrosivity - marine) environment, all galvanised surfaces on the tank and shed framing needed a premium solution.

The following Dulux Protective Coatings products were specified for the water tank's galvanised steel exterior. The system was applied after a dry abrasive brush blast clean.

Dulux® Duremax® GPE ZP at 150-microns, applied by airless spray.

Made to withstand the harsh Australian environment, Duremax GPE ZP is a general-purpose epoxy primer enhanced with zinc phosphate pigment. It offers inhibitive corrosion protection on mild steel.

Dulux® Duremax® GFX at 250-microns, applied by airless spray.

Featuring glass flake technology that creates a 'torturous path' for moisture, Duremax GFX provides the ultimate corrosion protection. It is ideal for coastal and wet environments.

Dulux® Weathermax® HBR at 100-microns, applied by brush and roller.

Chosen for its UV stability and application method, Weathermax HBR was applied on site in the Colorbond® colour Woodland Grey®.

Inside, the following system was applied:

Duremax GFX (two coats) at 200-microns per coat, applied by airless spray.

In between these two coats, an additional stripe coat of Duremax GFX was applied by hand to edges and bolts, to double coat these key areas

Both inside and out, Duremax GFX was the hero of the specification. The glass flake technology in this product keeps water out, making it the perfect choice for the long-term protection of new steelwork in highly corrosive, coastal environments.

Ease of application plus protection warranty

"As well as exceeding AS/NZS 2312.2:2014 5D, the Dulux Protective Coatings system provided greater exterior performance for the Gold Coast City Council, which gave the asset owners extra confidence in the products and system," explains Brendan.

Another advantage of our system was the ability to topcoat the water tank with a brush and roller system.

"The topcoat of Weathermax HBR was applied on site. Because brush and roller could be used, the application was very cost effective. If we'd used an airless sprayer, it would have caused significant overspray, which is not acceptable in a nature reserve. Likewise, building a containment unit to contain the overspray on site would have been very expensive."

Supply and service helps project hit targets

Dulux Trade Centre Newstead ensured efficient product delivery, enabling the project to be completed on time and according to the specification.

"Accurate product forecasting was essential here, as well as close planning with applicators IPCQ (Industrial & Protective Coatings Queensland)," explains Brendan.

"Our team also provided specification and technical advice throughout the project, to ensure seamless application."

According to applicator, Greg Jenson from IPCQ, Dulux Protective Coatings were a great team to work with.

"Dulux Protective Coatings can guarantee product supply which is a big advantage on a project like this. Another factor is ease of contact. To place a product order and get information about your order status is very easy with Dulux Protective Coatings. We received great sales and technical support from the team at Dulux Trade Newstead," says Greg.
