Protecting the Pipes

Before the artists could bring their creative vision to life, the pipes underwent a surface preparation process, where Jo-Anne Breneger from Indigo Jo Signs + Creative Services and fellow muralist Leia Sidery thoroughly cleaned the pipes using high pressure wash to ensure effective adhesion of the coatings. This crucial step prepared the pipes for the application of the two-coat system, specified by Dulux® Protective Coatings' expert Michael Trikilis, to provide corrosion protection and serve as the foundation for the artistic transformation.

The first coat applied to the pipes was Dulux® Luxaprime® UMP @ 50-microns DFT, a single pack zinc phosphate primer known for its corrosion protection properties. With a high level of zinc phosphate, this primer effectively shields the steel against corrosion in mildly corrosive environments. Additionally, its fast-drying formulation makes it an ideal choice for projects with tight timelines.

The second coat involved applying Dulux® Weathershield® Low Sheen, a top-quality exterior paint known for its durability and weather resistance. This coat ensures that the artwork remains vivid and intact even in the face of harsh environmental conditions. The combination of Luxaprime UMP and Weathershield Low Sheen not only guarantees the artistic vision comes to life but also enhances the longevity of the pipes.

The Artistic Vision

The inspiration behind the artwork lies in the cultural significance of the lands and waters on which the pipeline is based. The Re-Right Collective artists, guided by the shape and form of the boomerang, sought to pay tribute to the Indigenous community's traditions and knowledge of culture and place.

The boomerang holds immense cultural value and symbolises various aspects of Indigenous heritage, including hunting, storytelling, and connection to the land. By incorporating this iconic symbol into the artwork, the artists aim to foster a sense of connection and respect for the Indigenous community's rich cultural legacy.

The artists, Dennis Golding, and Carmen-Glynn Braun, have skillfully brought their creative vision to life, infusing the pipes with vibrant blues, intricate patterns, and meaningful symbolism. Their work serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous culture and heritage in contemporary society.

Impact and Significance

The transformation of the Sydney Desalination Plant pipes into works of art not only adds visual appeal to the landscape but also sparks conversations about cultural diversity and the importance of environmental sustainability. By blending artistic expression and functional infrastructure, this project showcases the potential for artistic interventions to create positive social and environmental impacts.

Moreover, the collaboration between the Sydney Desalination Plant and the Re-Right Collective highlights the importance of partnerships between the public and artistic communities. Such collaborations not only provide artists with unique platforms to showcase their talent but also enable asset owners to create spaces that resonate with their communities and leave a lasting impact.
