The Perfect Solution for Oatlands Aquatic Centre

Southern Midlands Council's Oatlands Aquatic Centre in Tasmania is a state-of-the-art facility that offers a range of amenities for the community to enjoy. However, with exposure to water and humidity, the facility's mild steel surfaces were at risk of corrosion.

To ensure the longevity of the aquatic centre, the council with the help of Philp Lighton Architects and Vos Constructions & Joinery turned to Dulux® Protective Coatings to ensure the centre was given a coating system that would protect it for years to come.

The Coating System

The aquatic centre's mild steel surfaces were divided into three categories based on their level of exposure to corrosive elements. Dulux Protective Coatings provided a unique coating system for each category to ensure that the mild steel surfaces were protected from corrosion. Here are the coating systems used for each category:

Category C2 (Low Corrosivity) and Category C4 (High Corrosivity)

To protect both the new internal mild steel surfaces that were exposed to the aquatic centre's environment and the external mild steel surfaces exposed to external elements, a three-coat system was used.

New internal mild steel

•    1st coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE ZP @ 150-microns to provide a base coat
•    2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE @ 150-microns to add thickness and durability
•    Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR was applied at 75-microns to provide a weather-resistant finish

New external mild steel

•    1st coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE ZP @ 125-microns
•    2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE @ 125-microns
•    Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 75-microns

Category C3 (Medium Corrosivity)

For new internal hidden mild steel surfaces that were exposed to the aquatic centre's environment in plant rooms, Dulux Protective Coatings used a two-layer coating system.

•    1st coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE ZP @ 150-microns
•    2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE @ 150-microns

Duremax GPE ZP is a high-performance, general-purpose epoxy primer that offers inhibitive corrosion protection on mild steel. Enhanced with zinc phosphate pigment, this coating system is designed to protect structures exposed to severe environment and is a reliable solution for any project that requires a durable coating system.

Duremax GPE is a high-performance two-pack epoxy protective coating that has been developed specifically for Australasian conditions. Utilizing the latest epoxy technology, this coating system offers effective barrier protection against corrosion and has good abrasion resistance.

Weathermax HBR is a high-performance coating, locally developed polyurethane coating designed to be used over a wide range of suitably primed substrates such as mild steel, galvanized steel, concrete, and aluminum. With its excellent gloss and color retention, it is a coating solution that can withstand even the most severe industrial and marine environments, as well as extreme UV exposure.

"The coating system used on the Oatlands Aquatic Centre offers a range of benefits that will ensure the longevity of the facility. The coating systems provide an effective level of corrosion resistance in a range of corrosivity environments, which is essential for a facility that is exposed to water and humidity. The durable finish is resistant to wear and tear, which is important for a facility that experiences high foot traffic. Additionally, the topcoat provides a weather-resistant finish that ensures the mild steel surfaces remain protected even in harsh weather conditions.", says Greg Marshall.

With the help of Dulux Protective Coatings, a range of coating systems were provided that were specifically tailored to the various corrosivity environments in the facility.
