Construction of this new pedestrian and cycling bridge has been a complex undertaking, requiring a massive amount of planning, coordination, and hard work. It required a team of skilled professionals led by BESIX Watpac who worked tirelessly to ensure that the bridge is not only structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing.
BESIX Watpac selected Beenleigh Steel Fabrications for the steel fabrication and Tranzblast Coating Services for the coatings application – a partnership that has spanned many projects.
Fabrication Undertaking
Beenleigh Steel was responsible for the fabrication of the steel bridge components for Kangaroo Point Bridge, with approximately 2,000 tonnes of steel used in the construction that is specially designed to withstand the harsh marine environment of the Brisbane River, ensuring that the bridge remains strong and durable.
The construction of Kangaroo Point Bridge has involved approximately 250,000 labour hours. This includes everything from the fabrication and coating of the steel sections to the transportation and assembly of the bridge on-site. The project required a team of skilled professionals from Beenleigh Steel and Tranzblast.
Aesthetics and Coating System
To ensure that the Kangaroo Point Bridge is aesthetically appealing, the partnership between BESIX Watpac, Beenleigh Steel and Tranzblast Coating Services, selected a PUR5 coating system, consisting of Dulux® Zincanode® 402, Dulux® Duremax® GPE and Dulux® Weathermax® HBR - using over 45,000 litres of this approved system.
Dulux® Protective Coatings State Sales Manager, Brendan Lichtendonk ensured there was stock of the PUR5 coating system specified and assisted Tranzblast to check the finish of the sections before being transported to site.
Collaboration Success
Beenleigh Steel transported the fabricated and finished coating applied sections to the construction site which was a major logistical challenge due to their size and weight. To minimise disruption to traffic, the sections were transported at night. Once transported, the sections were loaded onto a barge and transported by barge along the Brisbane River to the construction site. On-site, a crane was utilised to lift and assemble the sections into place.
The collaboration between BESIX Watpac, Beenleigh Steel and Tranzblast has been essential to the success of the project, ensuring that the bridge was built to the highest standards of quality and safety. The logistical challenges were overcome through careful planning and execution.
The Bridge Opens to the Community
The construction of Kangaroo Point Bridge has been successfully completed, and the bridge is now open, providing the community with a new link to the Brisbane CBD. This infrastructure project has been an achievement of careful planning, collaboration, and hard work, ensuring that the bridge was built to the highest standards of quality and safety.
