Dulux® Protective Coatings offers a range of high-performance surface coatings specifically designed to deliver exceptional UV resistance.
The challenge
UV radiation is powerful and can cause significant weathering and coatings degradation.
"The energy in UV light is sufficient to break molecular bonds," explains Kelvin Walst, Dulux® Protective Coatings' Technical Manager. "Over time, it can cause paints and coatings to fade, and clear coats to yellow, and gloss to drop."
"The problem isn’t just the visual degradation; the integrity of the coating can be compromised which threatens the service life of assets and increases maintenance costs."
The solution
A tailored, high quality coatings system can provide protection from Australia’s harsh UV rays.
To ensure optimal performance, a critical consideration when selecting a UV protective coating is the formulation of the product.
"The formulation of a coating plays a significant role in determining its performance and characteristics," Kelvin explains.
"Not all systems are alike. By selecting coatings with the right formulation, you can ensure optimal protection against UV damage and longevity for your coated surfaces. This in turn extends the service life of assets and reduces maintenance costs."
Our UV resistant products
Dulux Protective Coatings offers three flagship coatings that deliver excellent protection against UV damage and deterioration. These coatings also deliver a premium finish.
• Dulux® Weathermax® HBR is a high build recoatable polyurethane coating that can be used over a wide range of suitably primed substrates such as mild steel, galvanised steel, concrete and aluminium. This high-performance coating stands out for its remarkable UV resistance. Compared to generic polyurethanes, Weathermax HBR offers superior protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation. This coating is designed to maintain its vibrant appearance and protective properties even when exposed to intense sunlight for extended periods.
• Dulux® Quantum® V92 is a two-pack fluoropolymer topcoat designed to deliver superior weathering and gloss retention in areas of extreme UV radiation. It contains a high level of fluoro carbon, which enhances its ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. Quantum V92 offers exceptional resistance against UV radiation, moisture and other environmental elements, ensuring long-lasting protection for the coated surface. Its advanced formulation provides a durable topcoat that not only guards against UV damage but also maintains its performance and appearance over time.
• Dulux® Duration® T80 is a premium, two component, waterborne, fluorinated polymer finish that demonstrates excellent gloss and colour retention and is designed for applications where extended service periods are required. Duration T80 is an ideal choice for surfaces exposed to harsh weather conditions. Despite being water-based, Duration T80 exhibits properties like traditional solvent-based urethanes. Offering ease of application, it provides excellent UV resistance, protecting the coated surface from fading, discoloration, and other forms of UV damage.
"Weathermax HBR, Quantum V92, and Duration T80 are excellent choices for achieving superior UV resistance and weatherability," Kelvin says.
"Weathermax HBR offers exceptional UV resistance and a visually appealing finish, while V92 provides unmatched weatherability with its high level of fluoro carbon. Duration T80, a waterborne urethane, combines the advantages of water-based coatings with improved weatherability."
By choosing coatings like Weathermax HBR, Quantum V92, and Duration T80, asset owners can protect their assets from UV damage while maintaining a premium finish.
The solution in action
From bridges to lighthouses, Dulux Protective Coatings safeguard assets across the country against damaging UV radiation.
• Woodside Energy accommodation - Dulux® Durebild® STE MIO and Weathermax HBR were used to protect Woodside Energy's 604-bed facility for fly in/fly out workers from the harsh Western Australian sun.
• Lighting structures at the WACA - Specifically created to resist weathering and extreme UV radiation levels, Quantum V92 was used to protect the headframes of the stadium lights at Western Australia's iconic WACA stadium.
• Sydney's Herbarium - Quantum V92 delivered aesthetic appeal and robust protection for the Herbarium at Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens.
• Brisbane riverfront artworks - Duration T80 was applied to 10 sculptural artworks lining the Brisbane River waterfront delivering excellent colour retention, extended service periods, graffiti resistance and superior UV protection.
• Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse - Used on both the interior and exterior of the lighthouse, Weathermax HBR was chosen for its UV-tolerance, excellent gloss, colour retention, high durability, low maintenance and ease of application.
• Chemical storage units - The inclusion of Weathermax HBR in the protective coating system for chemical storage units in Victoria delivered durable, long-lasting UV protection.
