Murdoch Square is a $300 million development project spanning across a total of 1.2 hectares, located 12km south of the Perth CBD. This new precinct will be a hub for healthcare, medical treatment, retail, commercial and social connection.

Dulux® Protective Coatings are pleased to have supported completion of the 30-metre pedestrian bridge. The 26-tonne bridge is comprised of structural steel and will act as a patient corridor to connect the existing Fiona Stanley Hospital to the new precinct.

Our team worked closely with a range of partners on this project, including; Department of Health Western Australia, Hesperia, Hassell Studios, Multiplex, Lighthouse Engineering, and Complete Corrosion Control.

Premium protection that stays within budget

“The project team came to us with a challenge and we were able to provide a system that fit the budget and desired finish,” explains Business Development Executive Michael Filmer.

To achieve both cost efficiency and high-quality protective coatings, we opted for a two-coat system in line with System PUR 2a under AS/NZS A2312.1:2014.

“It was important for us to consider the project needs, the client needs and the coating environment to achieve a quality finish that suited all parties,” says Michael.

The pedestrian bridge is protected with a two-coat system, shop-applied via airless spray:

•    Primer: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 at 75-microns (µms)

•    Topcoat: Dulux® Luxathane® SPX at 50-microns (µms)

Superior satin finish from Luxathane® SPX

One of the essential requirements for the project was a smooth satin finish, as requested by the architects Hassell Studios.

As Michael explains, Luxathane SPX was an obvious choice for this scenario with high quality protection and aesthetic appeal.

“The satin finish gives a very subtle appearance to the steelwork. It doesn’t create glare and still provides the desired durability and protection.”

This high performance two component acrylic polyurethane was formulated for use in commercial and industrial environments where extended maintenance periods are preferred.

It has long-term recoatability, with minimum surface preparation required. It also offers high UV resistance, making it ideal for external applications.

Luxathane SPX has been favoured on other projects for its attractive finish and low maintenance. It’s currently in use on assets including Darwin’s Cullen Bay waterfront and the Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia.

Seamless project management from beginning to end

At Dulux Protective Coatings, we prioritise meeting deadlines and collaborate closely with all stakeholders to ensure projects stay on track, even when there are multiple partners involved.

“We work hard to provide the right coating system and that we have everything in place to avoid project delays,” says Michael.

Our robust processes and experienced team ensure product is ready when required and that communication is constant throughout.

“Things ran smoothly once we understood the scope and requirements of the project. Everyone was on the same page, between the builders, applicators, fabricators, and our team. In the end, it felt seamless.”
