Seven years on: train station steel coatings still performing

In our Coatings Retrospective Series, we're checking in on assets all over Australia to find out how Dulux® Protective Coatings products are performing many years after initial application.

Designed to cater for the growing communities in Perth’s southern suburbs, the multi-modal Aubin Grove train station was originally completed in 2015. On the Mandurah Line, it opened to the public in 2017.

Project partners

  • Asset owner: Public Transport Authority of Western Australia
  • Specifier: CAMPS (Coniglio Ainsworth Architects and MPS Architects Joint Venture)
  • Construction: Georgiou
  • Materials Scientist: Zedcon Scientific Services
  • Applicator: Kaefer Integrated Services

Coatings

First coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 at 75-microns (µm)
Second coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE at 125-microns (µm)
Third coat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR at 100-microns (µm)

What was the challenge?

When Aubin Grove train station was constructed in 2015, all steel surfaces were coated in Dulux Protective Coatings products to achieve durability, UV protection, graffiti resistance and an aesthetic finish.

In particular, the station's bridge overpass needed serious protection as it sits above the freeway in a high traffic area. Steel inside the bridge is exposed to dirt and contaminant fall out, with limited ability for surface cleaning.

What were the inspection findings?

The coatings on the steel bridge section of Aubin Grove train station were inspected and assessed in May 2022. The assessment revealed the coatings to be in very good condition:

  • no signs of breakdown
  • no visible rust at welded sections
  • good colour retention
  • excellent dry film thickness (DFT) across all areas that could be inspected
  • no coatings thickness measurements below original specification were recorded

Level 1*

Up close

"The durability of our coatings system has provided the protection Aubin Grove train station needed, over the long term." Joel Bock, Dulux Protective Coatings State Sales Manager, Western Australia

System benefits

Three layers of protection delivered lasting durability.

A two-pack epoxy zinc rich primer, Zincanode 402 offers cathodic corrosion resistance
Developed locally for Australian and New Zealand conditions, Duremax GPE is a highly versatile coating that protects steel in severe environments
Finally, Weathermax HBR helps to withstand extreme UV exposure. This high build recoatable polyurethane coating can be cleaned with most graffiti removal agents. It is known for its excellent gloss and colour retention during extended service periods

* Coating Inspection 5-Level Rating System

Coatings are inspected to determine the degree of deterioration. Ratings indicate the following condition status:

  • No film damage other than dirt and minor staining
  • Soiled, stained, ingrained dirt, chalking or loss of gloss
  • Minor film damage (cracking, flaking or erosion of topcoats) in small areas
  • Minor corrosion where up to 0.5% of the base metal is showing signs of rusting
  • Widespread and excessive corrosion and damage
