Located in Sydney Olympic Park, this state-of-the-art facility nurtures talent and provides elite teams with advanced training grounds. It serves as the home base for renowned teams such as NSW Breakers, NSW Blues, Women's and Men's Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder.
It is estimated that 35,000 club and community cricketers will visit the grounds each year. With two ovals, more than 50 training nets, an indoor centre, gym, and recovery facilities, as well as being the headquarters for Cricket NSW staff – the facility paves a path for an innovative and inclusive future of cricket.
The team at Dulux® Protective Coatings was engaged to assist with coatings for the interior and exterior structural steel.
Selecting the right products for the environment
Finding the right coatings system for this environment proved a unique challenge.
As Dulux Technical Sales Representative, Grant Lowe explains, “There was a lot of conjecture over what the environment was since it sits close to the Parramatta River. Is it a coastal environment? Is it not?”
The river carries a mix of saltwater and freshwater, which complicated the choice of coatings. Our team relied on years of technical experience and product knowledge to find the right mix.
“Protective coatings work as a team. You can’t just put one on there and expect it to do the whole job. They have their own purposes,” explains Grant.
This is a key reason that we work in multi-coat systems. By combining different product sets, we are able to provide tailored, long-lasting protection for a variety of asset types and conditions.
Robust Protection and Sleek Satin Finish for Exterior Surfaces
For the exterior exposed steel, a three-coat system was applied using airless spray.
- Primer: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 at 75-microns (µms) DFT. Formulated to withstand harsh corrosive environments, it provides a strong base layer for the facility.
- Second coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE MIO at 200-microns (µms) DFT. Developed specially for Australasian conditions, it offers added barrier protection.
- Topcoat: Dulux® Luxathane® SPX at 50-microns (µms) DFT. A top choice for commercial environments that require extended service periods. The smooth satin finish ensures excellent recoatability down the line.
Tailoring Coating Solutions for Interior and Exterior Applications Environments
Another challenge for our team was the need for different coatings to suit various steel structures both inside and out. Interior environments are less aggressive and typically require softer protection.
To cater to the diverse steel structures within the facility, the Dulux team customized four unique specifications for various environments, including internal exposed, internal hidden, external exposed, and external hidden steel. Throughout the process, collaboration with stakeholders was paramount to remain within budget while delivering commercially viable solutions.
“We didn’t want to over-engineer the project and end up over budget. We worked closely with stakeholders to stay in budget and ensure it was commercially viable,” says Grant.
