Rating 1 after 6 years for internal steelwork

In our Coatings Retrospective Series, we're checking in on assets all over Australia to find out how Dulux® Protective Coatings products are performing many years after initial application.

At Bunnings Warehouse in the southern Perth suburb of Cannington, protection and a high gloss finish were required for all the internal steel.

Coatings

What was the challenge?

The internal steel at Bunnings Cannington was coated offsite before being transported to site for installation.

Our system needed to be durable enough to withstand travel and installation, as well as contact from people and products in-store. Excellent coatings integrity and film thickness around bolt holes were required to prevent rust.

What were the inspection findings?

After six years, a full visual inspection at Bunnings Cannington, Western Australia found the coatings system to be in excellent condition.

Up close

"There is no discolouration and the white still has its beautiful, high impact gloss," says Kyle Nesbitt, Dulux Protective Coatings Technical Services Representative, WA. "There is only isolated areas of delamination, due to items hitting against the steel or moved around at the bottom of certain posts. The rest is all in great condition."

System benefits

The combination of Durepon EZP and Luxathane HPX gives the internal steel at Bunnings Warehouses a bright, high gloss finish that will last well into the future.

  • Durepon EZP is a two pack epoxy primer enhanced with zinc phosphate pigment for inhibitive corrosion protection on mild steel. It's used in commercial construction, manufacturing plants, warehouses and sporting facilities.

  • Luxathane HPX is a high performance, recoatable, high gloss polyurethane finish with outstanding gloss retention. It can be tinted with over 5,000 colours.

* Coating Inspection 5-Level Rating System

Coatings are inspected to determine the degree of deterioration. Ratings indicate the following condition status:

  3. Minor film damage (cracking, flaking or erosion of topcoats) in small areas
  4. Minor corrosion where up to 0.5% of the base metal is showing signs of rusting
  5. Widespread and excessive corrosion and damage
