With the help of third-party inspectors Remedy Asset Protection and Dulux Protective Coatings, the tank was given a coating system that will ensure it remains protected for years to come.
The Coating System
The internal coating system used on the water tank consisted of three layers:
• 1st coat: Dulux® Durepon® 66, was applied at 20-microns to provide a durable base coat
• 2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE Fast Cure @ 150-microns to add thickness and durability
• Topcoat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE Fast Cure @ 150-microns to provide a smooth, glossy finish
The external coating system used on the water tank also consisted of three layers:
• 1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns to provide a layer of protection against corrosion
• 2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE Quickturn @ 150-microns (µm)
• Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 75-microns to provide a weather-resistant finish
Benefits of the Coating System
Durepon 66 is a high-performance two-pack epoxy holding primer that offers excellent corrosion protection for several months in a C3 environment. It has a fast dry time and is compatible with a wide range of finishes, including epoxy, chlorinated rubber, acrylic, polyurea, polyurethane, and conventional alkyd topcoats.
Duremax GPE is a locally developed, high-performance two-pack epoxy protective coating designed for Australasian conditions. When cured with its Fast Cure Hardener it meets the compliance standards for potable water use (AS/NZS 4020:2018) and has a certified coating system. When cured with Fast Cure or Quickturn Hardeners, untinted Duremax GPE is suitable for fresh and saltwater immersion. The Fast Cure and Quickturn Hardeners allow for faster recoat times and rapid return to service. Duremax GPE with Fast Cure Hardener is recommended for potable water lining, while Duremax GPE with Quickturn Hardener is ideal for the external surfaces as a quick return to service intermediate coat.
Zincanode 402 is a two-pack epoxy zinc-rich primer specially formulated to provide cathodic corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments. This primer is ideal for use on abrasive blast cleaned steel surfaces, especially in situations where overcoating is required without the need for special mist or seal coat techniques. With its excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance properties, Zincanode 402 provides a reliable and long-lasting protective coating solution for even the harshest environments. It also offers rapid dry and overcoat times, making it an efficient and effective solution that protects against corrosion.
Weathermax HBR is a high-performance coating that offers excellent gloss and color retention even during extended service periods in severe industrial and marine environments. With its ability to withstand extreme UV exposure, this coating is ideal for use in outdoor environments where exposure to the elements is a concern. In addition to its excellent performance, Weathermax HBR can be easily applied using a brush or roller, making it a convenient and efficient solution for a variety of applications. It can also be spray applied up to 125-microns DFT in a single coat, providing a uniform and durable finish.
