Protecting Bundaberg’s newest community landmark

The Bundaberg Regional Council, in collaboration with architects ARCH, Stantec, and Woollam, has introduced a cutting-edge aquatic facility on Queensland's Coral Sea Coast..

The Bundaberg Aquatic Centre features a FINA standard, covered, 50m, heated competition pool designed to support regional and state-level events and training camps. Additional indoor heated pools and multi-purpose rooms will cater to fitness, teaching, and therapy programs, establishing a hub for comprehensive health and fitness services.

Structural Steel Coating System

A key component of the aquatic centre’s construction is the protective coating system applied to both internal and external structural steel. Mild structural steel fabrication, along with blasting and painting, was carried out by Cairns Steel Fabricators, with a spray‑applied PUR5 coating system specified by David Vivian of Dulux® Protective Coatings. This system provides critical protection against corrosion and environmental exposure, supporting the long‑term durability and structural integrity of the facility.

The PUR5 coating system for external exposed mild steel includes:

•    1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns (µm) DFT, is a zinc-rich primer that provides excellent corrosion protection by acting as a sacrificial barrier, preventing the steel from coming into direct contact with corrosive elements in the environment. This primer forms a robust foundation for the subsequent coatings.

•    Intermediate coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE @ 200-microns (µm) DFT, is a high-performance two-pack epoxy protective coating locally developed for Australasian conditions. It protects steel against corrosion with excellent barrier protection.

•    Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 75-microns (µm) DFT, is a locally developed high build recoatable polyurethane coating offering superior durability, low maintenance, graffiti resistance, and asset value retention.

The three-coat system used on the internal exposed mild steel:

•    1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns (µm) DFT

•    Intermediate coat: Dulux® Duremax® HBE @ 250-microns (µm) DFT, is a high solids, two-component high gloss epoxy designed for single-coat application up to 500-microns DFT on suitably prepared mild steel. It is suitable for steel and concrete in harsh chemical conditions, easy to apply at high film builds, and offers resistance to most chemicals and solvents.

•    Topcoat: Dulux® Weathermax® HBR @ 100-microns (µm) DFT
