Palmerston Bus Interchange Gets a Protective Coating System Upgrade

The Northern Territory Government sought to refurbish and repaint the Palmerston Bus Interchange in Darwin, Northern Territory. To achieve outstanding corrosion and abrasion protection, Norblast Industrial Solutions was tasked with applying a Dulux® Protective Coatings system that was specifically chosen for the project.

The Coating System

The Dulux Protective Coatings system used on the mild structural steel and panels at Palmerston Bus Interchange is a four coat system consisting of:

•    1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 at 75-microns (µm) DFT
•    2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GFX at 200-microns (µm) DFT
•    3rd coat: Dulux® Luxathane® SPX at 50-microns (µm) DFT
•    Topcoat: Dulux® Luxathane® SPX at 50-microns (µm) DFT

The application was done using spray application and brush and roller onsite insitu.

Zincanode® 402 is a two pack epoxy zinc rich primer designed to provide excellent cathodic corrosion resistance in even the harshest corrosive environments. This primer is specifically recommended for application on abrasive blast cleaned steel surfaces. With Zincanode® 402, you can achieve high film builds without worrying about mud cracking, ensuring a durable and reliable coating.

Duremax® GFX is a premium epoxy formulated with high solids and high build properties, making it perfect for achieving a self-priming finish. Its advanced glass flake technology provides exceptional resistance against corrosion, safeguarding valuable assets from deterioration. Moreover, Duremax® GFX offers remarkable protection against abrasion, ensuring long-lasting durability in even the most demanding environments. With its high performance and surface-tolerant nature, Duremax® GFX is the go-to choice for those seeking optimal asset protection and maintenance.

Luxathane® SPX is a two-component acrylic polyurethane that offers outstanding performance and a sleek, satin finish. This remarkable coating is designed to be recoatable with minimal surface preparation, making it a convenient choice for various projects. Luxathane® SPX can be directly applied over a range of Dulux® epoxy primers, universal primers, and high-build epoxy intermediate coats. With its versatility and exceptional quality, Luxathane® SPX is an ideal solution for achieving a flawless and durable finish.

The Benefits of the Coating System

“The combination of Zincanode® 402, Duremax® GFX, and Luxathane® SPX creates a coating system that not only protects the Palmerston Bus Station's infrastructure from corrosion but also exceeds the performance of the AS2312.1:2014 PUR5 system. This comprehensive system enhances resistance against abrasion, ensuring that the assets of the bus station remain intact and functional for an extended period. Additionally, it provides a sleek and durable finish that adds a professional and aesthetically pleasing touch to the station's appearance," explains Kate Rhodes, Technical Sales Representative at Dulux Protective Coatings.
