Melbourne's iconic 'cheese stick' required a special recipe

Whether you know it as a Melbourne icon or simply as 'the cheese stick', all Victorian motorists and many visitors too know this giant column towering over the CityLink toll road.

But here's something you may not know: it's painted in its very own Dulux® Protective Coatings colour.

Named 'True Yellow', Dulux® Weathermax® HBR, a 2 pack polyurethane, was formulated to deliver the ideal brightness, opacity and durability required by our client Transurban.

Dulux PC’s Victorian Sales Manager, Steve Kraljevic managed the project and personally supervised the overnight painting crew from Mattioli.

"Work could also only be completed between the hours of 10pm and 4am. However, it was required that one lane of traffic had to get through going both ways. Heights and climate were also at play," Steve explains. "To manage these constraints, we were asked to create a solution requiring only one coat of primer and one top coat."

This required a carefully tested system from Dulux PC Specification Consultant Senior Business Development Executive Daniel McKeown and David Marzouk from the technology team.

The colour and product combination was perfected over several months before a three-week application performed in the dead of night, with a 25-strong painting crew supported by traffic management staff.

Epoxy primer Dulux® Durebild® STE was applied at 80-microns (µm) followed by the Weathermax® HBR 'True Yellow' top coat at 100-microns (µm) in a gloss finish.

It's not the first time Dulux Protective Coatings has partnered with Transurban on a major asset. The red sticks on the same stretch of freeway still look impressive eight years after application.

"We are proud to deliver the highest quality solutions for complex projects," Steve says.

"The end result is fantastic with Transurban now planning to use the same coatings system for the adjacent yellow noise wall."
