Tell us about your role and career at Dulux Protective Coatings 

I’ve worked for DuluxGroup® for more than three decades. It sounds like a long time but it’s gone quickly. My roles have been in trade stores, the retail environment and now in protective coatings for the past 10 years.

My current role as Business Development Executive (NSW and ACT) is very varied. I write coatings specifications and provide solutions and technical support to builders, architects, engineers and consultants. I also work closely with asset owners to provide cost effective, durable solutions for the maintenance of their assets. I’m NACE 2 accredited and have a genuine passion for the technical side of protective coatings.

What drives you in your role?

I enjoy solving problems for our customers. I am very process-driven and gain satisfaction from seeing a challenge through to the best possible resolution.

Focusing on the small details to get specifications 100% right is my goal. If a coatings system is fit-for-purpose from the outset, the potential for failure decreases and time and money savings result. One of my all-time favourite projects was working with BlueScope Steel on a coke loader project. I was involved from the early design phase through to completion and continue to assist with ongoing maintenance.

I also enjoy the education side of things, engaging with our customers as well as graduates and cadets in the industry. There is a big opportunity to improve knowledge about corrosion protection. Our case studies are very useful to demonstrate the value of prevention.

What are Dulux Protective Coatings' top products and what benefits do they deliver for customers?

Our fluoropolymer range leads the pack in my opinion. For example Dulux® Quantum® V92 is a brilliant product offering great value for asset owners and managers. It provides long term cost saving benefits because it reduces maintenance cycles and increases asset life.

I believe the technology behind our products gives them an edge. On the Fort Dennison ferry wharf last year, a system of Dulux® Duremax® GFX and Dulux® Durepon® 66 was specified. The glass flake epoxy Duremax GFX impressed the fabricator who’d never used the product before. He also rated Durepon 66 for its ease of application as a holding primer.

What are the top trends right now in protective coatings?

Big industry trends include sustainability and warranties. Sustainability is a core element of the Dulux Protective Coatings business philosophy. Ensuring the right protection increases asset longevity and reduces the number of times a recoat is needed, which reduces impact on the environment.

In terms of warranties, the conversation is moving towards a broader understanding of interdependence. Many factors contribute to an asset’s lifespan including architecture, design, manufacture and materials. I’ve enjoyed being part of the conversation on this important topic, with senior figures in our industry.
