Luxafloor technology achieves zero downtime for Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Hangar
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service at La Perouse is a busy hub with pilots, rescue crew and staff working around the clock to patrol Sydney’s coastline. Pressing pause isn’t an option, not even when the hangar floors are in urgent need of repair.
Greg Scott and Danny Plazanin from the Dulux Protective Coatings NSW Trade team presented an ideal solution with our ‘fast return to service’ floor coating range.
Luxafloor Express Primer is a new generation product that can be overcoated in just 3 hours at 25 degrees. Top coated with Luxafloor FCF, which can be overcoated in just 2 hours in the same conditions, it’s now possible to complete coating in just one day. Conventional flooring epoxies require 24 hours between coats.
This project had a goal of zero downtime for the aircraft, so the team needed to apply some creative thinking.
“We decided to split the treatment of the 23 x 18 metre hangar floor space into two parts," explains Greg. "Working around normal operations of the facility, the team at New Era Floors carried out a diamond grinding of the concrete surface."
"Next, the Dulux NSW Trade sales force team roller applied the Luxafloor products over two days on each side of the floor, allowing the helicopter to be put to bed each night in the hangar on a dry surface.”
“We created a non-slip finish near the hangar door with the inclusion of Luxafloor Broadcast Aggregate in that section,” he adds.
New Era Floors donated time, staff and equipment to the four-day project, including the hire of a mobile generator to power the large robotic diamond grinding and vacuum units.
Dulux also has a proud history of supporting Surf Life Saving Australia, having helped to paint over 200 Surf Life Saving Clubs since 2012.
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service performed almost 200 rescue missions in the 2019/20 summer season. With overseas holidays put on hold for now, Australians are flocking to our famous beaches in record numbers this summer.
“This was a great opportunity to help our emergency services and allow the Dulux team to have some hands-on time applying our new technology products,” Greg reports with a smile. “The SLSA teams and crews were extremely impressed with the result.”
