Corrosion protection is a bridge to long life
In a seaport just outside Wollongong, BlueScope's Port Kembla Steelworks is Australia's largest steel production facility.
Dulux Protective Coatings has a long working relationship with BlueScope's asset services team, helping protect the facility's assets from corrosion in this marine environment.
When Bridge D was identified for a coatings refresh, the application had to be completed during night shifts, to enable a lane closure on the busy road below.
For this reason, our Business Development Executive Adam Hockey recommended application in the summer months to avoid low temperature issues.
The team at Surface Removal Specialists were recruited to apply a two-product system that would provide excellent corrosion resistance over an extended service period. After a power tool cleaning to AS1627.2 Grade St3, the bridge was coated with Durebild STE GF at 200 microns followed by a topcoat of Weathermax HBR at 75 microns.
Durebild STE GF has been developed specifically for Australasian conditions using advanced epoxy technology and incorporates glass flake for additional barrier protection and abrasion resistance. It can be top-coated with a wide range of coating types and is available with a bloom-free cold cure hardener.
As a topcoat, Weathermax HBR was applied. Tintable in over 5,000 shades, this topcoat is a popular choice for asset managers seeking colour retention in severe environments and under extreme UV exposure.
"The bridge looks like new and should not need a major recoating for 20 to 25 years," Adam says. "Projects like this demonstrate how an asset maintenance program can be executed well with the right support."
