Celebrating Nature's Beauty: 'Convergence' Sculpture by Andrew Frazer

The Shire of Dardanup, in collaboration with artist Andrew Frazer, has unveiled a stunning architectural design piece titled 'Convergence.' This captivating sculpture forms part of the Ferguson Valley Art Trail, an upcoming 15-stop public art installation that aims to showcase the exquisite beauty of the Ferguson Valley.

Positioning, Fabrication, Engineering, and Documentation of 'Convergence'

Under the guidance of Element, the art direction team, 'Convergence' was strategically positioned at the Pile Road pull-in bay and scenic viewpoint, allowing visitors to experience the sculpture's harmonious integration with its surroundings. This prime location provides a moment of pause for observers to appreciate the beauty of the Ferguson Valley. The meticulous fabrication of 'Convergence' was entrusted to Old Coast Studios, renowned for their expertise and craftsmanship. They skillfully brought Andrew Frazer's artistic concept to life, creating a captivating sculpture composed of deliberately spaced steel rings. This design allows sunlight to permeate through, mirroring the enchanting play of fragmented light filtering through the valley's trees.

To ensure the stability and longevity of 'Convergence,' Civil and Structural Engineers in Bunbury played a vital role. Leveraging their expertise, they provided the necessary structural calculations and engineering solutions. Their contributions supported the sculpture's design and ensured its safe installation.

Blank Slate Creative took on the important task of documenting the creation of 'Convergence.' Their comprehensive documentation captures the artistic process and the sculpture's journey, preserving it for future reference and appreciation. Their work ensures that the story behind the artwork and its intricate details are recorded, adding depth to the overall project.

Preservation: Anti-Graffiti Clear Coat

Recognizing the need to protect this artwork, Andrew Frazer approached Kyle Nesbitt for assistance. Kyle Nesbitt suggested the application of an anti-graffiti clear coat over the multiple colors used in Dulux® Weathershield®. To achieve this, a suitable sandblaster was recommended for the project, ensuring the long-lasting preservation of 'Convergence.'

System Used for Preservation

Class 2.5 blast was applied on the mild steel as part of the preservation process.

  • 1st coat: Dulux® Luxaprime® ZP @ 75-microns (µm) DFT. Luxaprime ZP is a high-build anticorrosive primer finish containing zinc phosphate and micaceous iron oxide pigments. It offers superior performance compared to conventional ROZP primers, with resistance to moisture and the ability to achieve relatively high builds in a single application.
  • 2nd and 3rd coats: Dulux® Weathershield® Low Sheen. Weathershield Low Sheen features an exclusive MaxiFlex® formulation, allowing it to be self-priming on most surfaces. It provides long-life protection against all weather conditions, including UV radiation, and maintains vibrant color.
  • 4th coat: Dulux® Acrathane® IF Clearcoat Low Sheen. Acrathane IF Clearcoat Low Sheen is a clear, isocyanate-free, catalyzed acrylic finish that ensures long-term durability for both exterior and interior areas. Its isocyanate-free formulation is particularly suitable for on-site spray application. Acrathane IF Clearcoat Low Sheen is non-yellowing and crystal clear, offering enhanced durability and graffiti protection. It can also be applied directly to unpainted concrete for an easy-to-clean, wet look finish.

The application of these coatings and the meticulous preservation process guarantee that 'Convergence' will be safeguarded, maintaining its beauty and integrity for years to come.
