Dulux® Protective Coatings supported the build with a specification to protect the structural steel trusses, backed up by a steady supply of products throughout steel production. The trusses were manufactured and coated off site by two steel fabricators: Hutchins Bros in Narrandera and Algon Steel in Newcastle.
Strong enough to support the weight of the entire building, the 35-tonne trusses were split into three parts for transportation to the college in Box Hill. They were reassembled on site and lifted into place by crane.
A four-part specification
Four different coatings were used to protect the steel.
- Dulux® Duremax® GFX was used for all buried steel. Two coats were applied to the truss ends. This coating has a high glass flake content, and provides an excellent barrier for immersion or splashes.
- Dulux® Zincanode® 402 was used to prime the steel. This zinc rich epoxy dries fast and offers exceptional cathodic corrosion resistance.
- Dulux® Duremax® GPE is a versatile, two pack epoxy. It will further protect the steel against corrosion and abrasion.
- Dulux® Weathermax® HBR was selected as the gloss topcoat. This proven weatherable topcoat can achieve a thickness up to 125-microns (µm) in a single spray coat.
Having used our products for more than a decade, Hutchins Bros were sure Dulux Protective Coatings would be fit for the job.
“We’ve used Dulux Protective Coatings regularly for 10 years,” Hutchins Bros explained. “Weathermax HBR is a great topcoat, it provides really good coverage.”
Part of an effective supply chain
Buildcorp led a multi-partner team to shape the building design, using an off-site prefabrication strategy to significantly reduce the on-site delivery time.
Tony Sukkar AM, Managing Director, Buildcorp, shared the following project insights: “The innovative prefabrication strategy and game-changing partner collaboration enabled this project to be delivered swiftly with a very high quality outcome. The most effective off-site prefabrication solution was developed for a range of building materials to reduce construction time and increase quality control and safety.”
Dan Jones is our technical sales representative in Newcastle. He worked closely with Algon Steel to supply coatings for its steel production.
"I made sure our supply chain ran smoothly, to enable Algon Steel to fulfill its role in the building schedule. The paint team expressed to me that the products were easy to apply," Dan explained.
