For many years, the park was accessed via three timber bridges that provided access to different parts of the park. However, in April 2021, these bridges were closed to the public after a safety audit revealed they needed to be replaced.
The ACT Government commissioned the construction of three new steel bridges that are now open for the public to enjoy. The new bridges feature a rusted finish that complements the natural setting and colours of the Umbagong native grasslands. The rusted finish is a unique and striking feature of the new bridges, providing a beautiful contrast to the white timber bridges they replaced.
Expert Steel Fabrication
ACT Steelworks, a renowned steel fabrication company based in the ACT, was responsible for the construction of the new pedestrian footbridges. The bridges were thoughtfully designed to achieve a visually appealing, safe, and durable structure. Mild steel columns were used as a key component of the bridges, along with other high-quality materials and state-of-the-art technology during the construction process, which guarantees their longevity and reliability.
Advanced Application of Coating Systems
Dean Industrial, a local industrial painting and coating company, was responsible for applying the coating system on the structural steel of the new pedestrian footbridges and engaged Jack Jaber, Technical Sales Representative for a coating system that had to meet the AS/NZS 4312:2019 Category C3 standard, making it suitable for use in areas subject to moderate levels of corrosivity, such as coastal environments.
The coating system used on the external exposed structural steel columns under the footbridge consisted of:
• 1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 at 75-microns (µm), a two pack epoxy zinc rich primer formulated for cathodic corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments
• 2nd coat: Dulux® Duremax® GPE MIO at 125-microns (µm), a coating specially formulated with micaceous iron oxide pigment, which provides superior barrier protection
• 3rd coat: Dulux® Quantum® FX Fine at 60-microns (µm) in the colour Maxim
• Topcoat: Dulux® Quantum® Clearcoat at 46-microns (µm)
Quantum FX is a high-quality, bright metallic two pack acrylic polyurethane that comes in a variety of 60 stunning colors. It is perfect for areas that require a visually striking impact, as it offers two gorgeous finishes - fine and coarse metallic. In addition to its striking appearance, Quantum FX is also highly durable and long-lasting, with exceptional exterior durability and gloss retention when topcoated with Quantum Clearcoat.
"By using a recoatable high gloss clear polyurethane finish in the coating system, we were able to provide a durable and long-lasting protective layer that not only resists abrasion, chemicals, and UV radiation, but also ensures the bridges are protected from harsh elements, ultimately increasing their lifespan." says Jack.
The Umbagong footbridges are a safe and accessible addition to the community's infrastructure, while also ensuring the preservation of the park's natural beauty for generations to come.
