Specifier selects Dulux PC for steel bridge upgrade

Spanning the Maribyrnong River, the 25-year-old Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge provides a handy and picturesque crossing for walkers and bike riders. When this much-loved Melbourne bridge needed a revamp, the project team at Freyssinet Australia engaged Dulux. Providing long-term durability for the steel bridge was a key factor and a Dulux PC system was nominated in the project specification.

The steel bridge was given an abrasive clean and primed with Zincanode 402Durebild STE  and a top coat of Weathermax HBR completed the treatment.

Protective coatings consultant Shaddy De Chavez says the three products combine to deliver excellent long-term durability.

"All three products are designed to help protect assets in harsh environments. Together they provide a complete solution to help resist corrosion and extend an asset's service period," he explains.

Jointly funded by the Moonee Valley City Council and Maribyrnong City Council, the four-month upgrade also included the replacement of all timber joists, new decking and lighting, and replacing the timber handrails with steel.

Dulux Protective Coatings Victoria Sales Manager, Steve Kraljevic worked closely with Shaddy and the project team, providing advice about application during Melbourne's winter.

"Freyssinet did a great job meeting its project deadline, as application days were impacted by the weather," Steve explains.

Shaddy says Dulux PC can devise coatings systems for diverse assets exposed to varying conditions.

“In this case, the system was specified for the client by the project manager. But we often work closely with asset owners, architects and engineers to determine the best product solution. We can even customise our products if needed."
