The Cube Wodonga, originally designed by Williams Ross Architects is a state-of-the-art entertainment centre located in the city’s central business district. The project led by JWP Architects involved delivering a durable and visually consistent finish across the external cladding, constructed by Sustainabylt Pty Ltd and applied by John Stokes Painting.

The project required a robust coating system capable of withstanding weather exposure while maintaining colour consistency across a vibrant external palette. Long-term colour retention and reduced maintenance were key priorities, given the building’s visibility and public use.

The coating also needed to be suitable for brush and roller application to support practical on-site installation. Ease of application, particularly when working at height using elevated work platforms (EWPs), was an important consideration for the applicator.

Coating Specification

The selected three-coat specification was designed to balance durability, finish quality, and application efficiency, which included:

First coat: Dulux® Luxepoxy® 4 White Primer was applied at 50-microns. This primer provides strong intercoat adhesion and is suitable across a wide range of substrates, including galvanised steel, non-ferrous metals, concrete, hardwood, and MDF. Its versatility and ease of use made it a practical choice for the project.

Second coat and Topcoat: Dulux® Quantum® V92 was applied at 75-microns dry film thickness per coat over existing Alucobond panels. Quantum V92 is a high-gloss, two-pack fluoropolymer coating designed for superior weather resistance and long-term gloss retention. Developed for Australia and New Zealand conditions, it performs well in high UV environments and helps extend maintenance cycles by retaining colour and finish over time.

Application and On-Site Performance

The system was applied by John Stokes Painting using brush and roller methods. The applicator team reported that the coating was easy to work with and achieved a smooth, consistent finish, even when applied from EWPs across large façade areas.

This ease of application supported efficient installation without compromising finish quality, meeting both contractor and project requirements.

Outcome Through Collaboration and Specification Support

“The final result delivers a combination of colour and a premium coating system that ensures the asset keeps a sharp and bold appearance for years to come. The use of a fluoropolymer topcoat supports long-term durability while reducing the need for frequent maintenance.”, explains Dulux® Protective Coatings, James Davide.

The specification process involved close collaboration with the local Inspirations Paint store owner, who supported the selection of a system suited to the project’s requirements. This ensured alignment between all stakeholders resulting in a practical and effective outcome.
