Choosing the Right Coating System
To ensure the longevity and durability of the steel components, Monaco Joinery & Design contacted Steve Kraljevic at Dulux® Protective Coatings, for advice on the best coating system. After assessing the project's requirements and environmental conditions, Steve recommended a coating system that would provide excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and abrasion resistance.
The Coating System
The coating system used for the project included an abrasive blast class 2 ½, followed by three coats of Dulux® Protective Coatings:
• 1st coat: Dulux® Zincanode® 402 @ 75-microns (µm)
• 2nd coat: Dulux® Ferreko® No. 3 @ 100-microns (µm)
• Topcoat: Dulux® Ferreko® No. 3 @ 100-microns (µm)
Zincanode 402
Zincanode 402 is a two-pack epoxy zinc-rich primer formulated for cathodic corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments. It is recommended for use over abrasive blast cleaned steel surfaces, especially where overcoating is required without special mist or seal coat techniques. With rapid dry and overcoat times, Zincanode® 402 provides excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance.
Ferreko No. 3
Ferreko No. 3 is a two-pack epoxy coating formulated with micaceous iron oxide pigment that imparts outstanding durability and abrasion resistance. The micaceous iron oxide pigment particles interlock in the film to form a barrier against moisture ingress and improve resistance to degradation by UV light.
"Ferreko No. 3 is an excellent choice for steel components that are exposed to harsh outdoor environments, such as those used in Monaco Joinery & Design's project. Its unique formulation provides excellent durability and abrasion resistance, while the micaceous iron oxide pigment particles offer exceptional barrier protection against moisture ingress and UV light degradation. The subtle metallic sparkle also adds an aesthetic appeal to the finished product.", says Steve.
The combination of coated steel and wood can create stunning and durable joinery solutions, but it's essential to protect the steel components from harsh outdoor elements. Choosing the right coating system can ensure the longevity and durability of the finished product.
